Summary: the villages, there is a large tumulus known as “The White Lady.” It is surrounded by a dense forest, and the Kirghis believe that the spirit of a beautiful maiden, who was buried there alive many centuries ago, haunts the area. A Russian official, disregarding the superstitions of the locals, decided to excavate the tumulus, hoping to find valuable treasures. However, soon after the excavation began, strange occurrences started happening in the village: cattle died mysteriously, crops failed, and a plague spread among the people. The Kirghis were convinced that these calamities were caused by the disturbance of “The White Lady,” and they demanded that the Russian official cease the excavation and make amends to the spirit. Finally, after realizing the severity of the situation, the official complied with their demands, and the Kirghis performed a ceremony to appease the spirit. The incidents ceased, and the village returned to normalcy, a lesson learned about respecting the beliefs and traditions of the indigenous people, even if they may seem irrational.
