Summary: The Cochin Jews, known for their unique customs and practices, possess valuable ancient artifacts such as two copper plates with engraved privileges granted to a past member named Joseph Rabban. These plates are considered the community's charter and are safeguarded in an iron box at the Paradesi Synagogue. Anquetil du Perron, a French scholar, made a copy of the Tamil inscription on the plates in 1758 and had it certified by a local figure named Joseph Hallegua. The Hebrew confirmation date and the Mudaliar's name were noted on the copy. Despite various attempts, native scholars could not decipher the inscription. Anquetil du Perron sought the help of Ezekiel Rahabi, a local merchant, to understand the text, enhancing the exploration of the Jewish antiquities in Cochin. The precious artifacts provide insights into the community's history, culture, and unique privileges granted by ancient rulers.
