Summary: you uttered this ecstatic exclamation?” And the venerable Bhaddiya replied: “ It is true, lord, as they say, that when I was retired into the forest, at the foot of a tree, into solitude, I gave utterance over and over again to this ecstatic exclamation, ‘ 0 happiness ! 0 happiness! ’ ” . . . “ What do you think, Bhaddiya, is it the sense-pleasures of the household life, or is it the celestial bliss of the recluse state that is particularly agreeable to you, that you thus incessantly uttered this ecstatic exclamation?” (And the same is recounted of a number of other monks including Subhadda) Parting Words with the Order- And the Blessed One said to Ananda: “ Thereafter, Ananda, let each of the brethren, if he so desire, retire from the Order. V And the Blessed One addressed the brethren, saying : “ Now, brethren, I take my leave from you. Henceforth, there is no one with you who shall lead you. Be lights unto yourselves. Rely on yourselves ; do not rely on external help. Hold fast to the truth as your lamp. Seek salvation alone in the truth. Look not for assistance to any one besides yourselves. And how, brethren, is a brother to be a light unto himself, to rely on himself, and not to rely on external help? How within himself is a brother to hold fast to the truth as his lamp, to seek salvation alone in the truth, and not to look for assistance to any one besides himself? Here, brethren, a brother abides reflecting on the nature of the body in the body, with diligence, self-controlled, and mindful, overcoming both the desire and discontent common in the world. He abides reflecting on the nature of sensations in sensations, on the nature of thoughts in thoughts, on the nature of things in things, with diligence, se1f-controlled, and mindful, overcoming both desire and discontent common in the world. So, brethren, a brother is a light unto himself, relies on himself, does not rely on external help. So within himself does a brother hold fast to the truth as his lamp, seeks salvation alone in the truth, looks not for assistance to anyone besides himself. This, brethren, is how a brother dwells as a light unto himself, relies on himself, does not rely on external help.”
