Summary: informed that his mother was a Chandala woman, who, when pregnant, dropped some water on the ground, which water was drunk by his mother. Matanga then declared that he would desert his mother. He was hospitably received by Ruru, a friend of his father's, who was not aware of his descent. Matanga afterwards celebrated a sacrifice, at which the gods refused to be present, when he was informed by Vasishtha of his true origin. Matanga's daughter Rambha was married to Rituparna, king of Ayodhya.Matanga himself lived in a cave in the mountain Rishyamụka.
