Summary: Government for the same purpose; and he not only obtained permission to purchase 5000 bushels of Paddy, for which he made ow con- siderable pecuniary sacrifice, but also had it conveyed to Tanjore, and distributed it to the poor at a low and fixed price. It is remarkable that, during both these visits of the famine, he was the constant guest of the Rajah, and that he not only obtained his hearty concurrence in this measure of mercy, but was fur- ther gratified by his declaring that, after what he had seen Swartz do in this distressing emergency for his subjects, he would in future decline to ac- cept presents or tributes from his people, as his predecessors had done. This conduct of the Missionary was not only a practical demonstration of the benevo- lence of Christianity, but also a powerful influence on the Rajah and his associates, who were thus led to perceive the advantages of a pure and disinter- ested benevolence over the selfish and oppressive policy they had before pursued.
