Summary: agreed to, and I went to stay with some old friends at Kiamari, where I enjoyed fine sea-bathing. In the autumn I went to Karachi to assist at the Karachi Exhibition. The local Government had sanctioned it, and a local committee had worked hard to make it a success. Sir Charles Napier declared it open amidst great enthusiasm. The Turko- man camels, the Arab horses, and the many races of men— Pathan, Afghan, Mahratta, Baluchi, Sikh, Beluchi, and Sindi—made an animated and striking scene. The exhibition was held in the grounds of the Residency, and its results were so successful that a second exhibit was projected. I returned to Sukkur, greatly refreshed by my holiday, and settled down to a winter of dogged magisterial work.
